Equipment

 

Here's a few lists that should not be forgotten or overlooked for a planting season. You can definitely add to these lists. This is ONLY the bare essentials.

 

Planter's Equipment

 

  • To supply your own tent to live in (tarp recommended to cover).
  • Planting bag, shovel, whistle and 3 silvicool bags to insert in your planting bags, these can be purchased in west Edmonton at CFE (Canadian Forestry Equipment).
  • Steel toed work boots (mandatory WCB).
  • Rain gear (mandatory) Wetskins recommended.
  • Sleeping bag good for cold mornings.
  • Pillow.
  • Minimum 4-liter water jug to bring to the block every day.
  • Bug repellent.
  • Flashlight.
  • Alarm clock.
  • Gloves (both webbed and dishwashing).
  • Lots of hats.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Lots of socks.
  • Anti-histamines (for those with allergies).
  • Duct tape.
  • Heavy sweaters and coat for rainy weather.
  • Towel and toiletries.
  • Tensor bandages and band-aids.
  • Cotton work pants. Jeans not recommended.
  • Garbage bags to keep your clothing dry.
  • Small backpack to carry you lunch, extra clothes and water to the field.
  • Hand lotion. (Your hands may get dry and cracked).
  • Pens and notepads to keep track of the trees you plant every day.
  • Cheap watch for the field, it is important to know what time it is.
  • Whatever else you can think of to make you comfortable.

 

Forman's Equipment

  • First Aid #1 kit for each truck [usually provided by company].
  • Spill kit for each truck [usually provided by company].
  • Fire extinguisher for each truck [usually provided by company].
  • Oil for trucks and quads [usually provided by company].
  • Jack-all and axle jack [usually provided by company – axle jacks come with rental vehicles].
  • Spare keys for each truck.
  • Rope for tying things, anything.
  • Lighter.
  • Duct tape.
  • Flagging tape.
  • Briefcase or bag for important papers, reciepts etc.
  • Pens/Markers.
  • Calculator.
  • Elastics.
  • Tow rope.
  • Star wrench.
  • Adjustable wrench.
  • Multi-screwdriver (bring a whole tool kit if you can).
  • Extra planting shovel and set of planting bags.
  • Booster cables.
  • Anti-histamines.
  • Squeegee.
  • Air pump.
  • Bottle of puncture seal.
  • Gloves.
  • Watch.
  • Tally book or tally sheets.
  • Magnifying glass.
  • Cell phone (optional).
  • Compass/GPS unit (optional).
  • Laptop computer (optional).
  • Axe (optional).

 

Forman/Manager Eqipment

  • Briefcase.

Shuswap Silvics Ltd. was established in 1987 as a limited company providing tree-planting services mainly in BC. Division B of Shuswap Silvics Ltd. was registered as 928297 Alberta Ltd. known as The Planting Company in 2000, both companies are owned and operated by Mr. Jim Ilott.

 

 

Diverse Silviculture
Diverse Silviculture is based out of Whitecourt, AB, and has been operating in central Alberta since April of 2000. For the most part Diverse has been doing silviculture surveys in Alberta, along with a little tree planting on the Vancouver Island.
